This site is hosted by Mick Calder, a semi retired agribusiness consultant, company administrator, writer, copy editor and proofreader. In essence a bit of a generalist in matters relating to Agribusiness.
After graduating from Lincoln College with a MAgrSc in Agricultural Marketing he was hooked by the meat industry. An initial stint as Research Officer in the Meat & Wool Economic Service led on to economic research at the Meat Board. He served four years in London before becoming the Board’s Secretary in 1978.
In 1987 after having almost recovered from the ups and downs of the Board’s lamb market intervention he boarded the Freesia Investments/Primary Resources Ltd roller coaster. Now he has come to his senses and after working part time for the NZ Lamb Co, he is now doing the best he can as a part time Agribusiness Consultant.
Mick has a comprehensive collection of meat industry reports and other ephemera spanning 30 years, addressing real or imagined problems facing the industry. Many have recommendations that were largely ignored at the time or rejected as being nothing new. Even so the industry has belatedly adopted some of the proposals, occasionally at considerable cost, and moved onwards.
He has long held the view there was a book to be written about the meat industry; having finished one, “Meat Acts” co-authored with Janet Tyson, he is convinced there are still a few more stories to be told.
Recently he has developed an interst in copy editing and proofreading and is in the process of setting up a business in this art.
